두 문장을 하나로.. 절 (clause) / 명사절 (noun clause) <1>* 다음 이야기를 읽고 아이디어를 내 봅시다.
This is story of Koala Yu. Yu was a friend of Jin's. He was very nice andsweet. He loved music. He was dreaming of being a singer someday. Therefore, hepracticed singing and dancing everyday. But sadly no other koalas around him do notthought that he could be a singer.
Yu had a serious problem about speaking. He could say a sentencewith only one subject and verb. Usually it was OK, but if he was in a hurry ornervous it got more serious and he felt terrible about himself.Jin felt very sorry for him and wanted to help him. So one day she decided to talk about this with her friends and find some solution.
Jin : Jason, you are the most brilliant story teller I have ever known. Don't you haveany idea to help him?
Jason : Well exactly what is his problem?
Jin : He can't say a sentence with more than two subjects and verbs. Especiallyquestions. He says, "Where are you going? Tell me."
Jason : I see. Then how do you say that sentences?
Jin : I say, " Tell me where you are going."
Jason : Have you ever tried to tell him the rule about this?
Jin : Rule ? What rule? Is there any rule about this?
Jason ; Of course there is. Yu is an intelligent guy. He can learn. I'm sure.
Jin: Actually he was born in the far south and raised there until he was 2. He is used to some aborigine language there and I heard that the language was different from English. Maybe that can be a problem for him. If we can compare two languages, and let him see the difference, he may understand easily.
Jason: OK then let's call my grandma. She is from Korea when she was a chick. She might know some tips for him.
* 영어와 한국말을 비교해서 생각해 봅시다.
1) 너 알고 있니? 그녀가 어디 있지? --- 이 두 문장을 합친다면 어떻게 말할까요?
“너 그녀가 어디 있는지(를) 알고 있니?” 가 될 것입니다. 잘 살펴보면 ‘그녀가 어디 있지?’라는 문장에 목적어의 조사 ‘를’ 이 있습니다.
그러면 이것을 영어로는 어떻게 해야 할까요? 영어 문장을 이런 식으로 나열해 봅시다.
Do you know where is she? 가 됩니다. 'where is she' 가 목적어의 자리인 동사 다음으로 들어갔습니다. 그런데 'where is she' 는 여전히 의문문의 형태를 갖고 있습니다. 더 이상 의문문이 아닌 목적어로 변한 이 문장을 의문문의 모습으로 두는 것은 알맞지 않습니다. 그렇다면 문장의 내용을 그대로 두면서 형태에만 변화를 주는 방법은 무엇이 있을까요? 바로 어순입니다. Do you know where she is ?
2) 생각해 볼 내용 두 번째.
이 문장은 원래 두 개의 문장이 하나로 합쳐진 것이지요. 그렇다면 ‘절+절’인 문장일 것입니다. 큰 문장의 목적어가 되어버린 where she is 는 이 때 무슨 절일까요? 문장에서 목적어 노릇을 하고 있으므로 그것은 명사입니다.
3) 그러므로 간접의문문(이중의문문)은 명사절입니다.
즉 두 의문문을 하나로 합할 수 있고 이 때 목적어 역할을 하는 문장이 명사절이 됩니다. 이 때 의문사는 의문사 고유의 의미를 가지며 동시에 접속사 역할을 합니다.
*한 걸음 더 - 간접의문문은 왜 쓸까
말로 한다면 즉 구어체라면 우리가 알고 있는 일반적인 의문문을 씁니다. 하지만 이것을 글 즉 문어체로 옮겨 쓴다면 형태가 바뀌는 것이 자연스럽습니다.
구어체 : Koala Jin ; 유 너는 왜 가수가 되고 싶어?
문어체 : Koala Jin 은 유에게 왜 가수가 되고 싶은지를 물었다.
영어도 마찬가지입니다. 그러므로 간접의문문은 아주 많이 쓰이는 문장의 종류는 아니지만, 반드시 알아야합니다. 그런대 접할 기회가 많지 않다보니 어순에 관한 규칙을 잊기 쉽습니다. 이럴 때 우리말을 떠올리면 좀 더 쉽게 기억을 되살릴 수 있습니다.
문제1) 다음의 문장을 다시 원래의 두 문장으로 분리하시오.
She wants to know how you can find the answer.
Do they know when the class starts?
Tell me why he left early.
I don't know what made her mad.
I'd like to know who the girl is.
Can you tell me where a police station is?
Please let me know which one is the key for the lock.
4)그러면 의문사가 없는 일반 의문문(be / do) 는 어떻게 될까요?
Does she know? Is he fine?
넌 알고 있니? + 그 남자 괜찮니? = 너 그 남자 괜찮은지 (아닌지) 알고 있니?
위의 두 가지 의문문은 의문사가 있는 의문문과 달리 yes / no 로 대답해야합니다.
그렇다면 결국 yes 인지 no 인지 즉 ‘~인지 아닌지’를 묻는 의문문이므로
* ‘~인지 아닌지’ 로 whether (if)를 접속사로 하고 접속사이므로 당연히 반드시 S+V 가 이어집니다.
Does she know whether(if) he is OK? 괜찮은지(아닌지)를 --- 목적어 (명사절)
문제2) 다음 문장을 명사절이 들어있는 간접의문문으로 다시 쓰시오.경우에 따라 문맥에 알맞게 대명사의 형태를 변화시켜야합니다.
Where is my mom? I don't know.
What is my mom doing right now? I wonder.
What does she want me to do? I guess.
Where does those rangers live? We would like to know.
Who are the rangers? Are they really good people? Jin wondered.
When will Jason come back? Sis asked me.
Where should we go to find my mom? We have to find out.
What do we need to have her back? Rabbi asked Jin.
Do we need to fight against people? Do you know?
Why does Jin look down? Yu asked Jason.
Whose den is this? Sis asked to Jin.
Can we figure out the way to save her? Sis wondered.
5) 다음 문장을 다시 한 번 생각해 봅시다.
Where should we go to find my mom? We have to find out.
--> We have to find out where we should go to find her mom. ( my - her 은 주어의 변화 때문입니다. )
Can I figure out the way to save Jin's mom? Sis wondered.
--> Sis wondered if he can figure out the way to save Jin's mom. ( I - he 는 주어의 변화 때문입니다. )
위의 문장들은 두 절의 주어가 같기 때문에 주어를 구태여 두 번 말 할 필요가 없습니다. 즉, 우리는 (우리가) 그녀의 엄마를 찾으려면 어디로 가야할지 알아내야해.
Sis 는 (그가) 진의 엄마를 구할 방법을 알아낼 수 있을지를 알 수 없었다.
그런데 반복되는 주어를 생략한다면 의문사 이하의 내용이 목적어가 되므로 ‘의문사 + to 부정사’ 로 쓸 수 있습니다. 이 때 should 나 can 은 생략해도 의미가 전달되므로 생략합니다.
We have to find out where to go to find her mom.
Sis wondered whether to figure out the way to save Jin's mom.
* 의문사(+whether / why 제외 ) + to R은 널리 쓰이는 표현입니다.
I don't know what to do.
Could you tell me how to get there by train?
I know where to go to register.
Do you know when to leave to catch the bus?
I know who to rely on for the matter. (who to R 은 많이 쓰지는 않습니다.)
I am not sure whether to go.
문제3) 다음 문장을 to 부정사를 이용하여 다시 쓰시오.
1. He showed me how I could take a picture with my new cell phone.
2. Please tell me what I should do to help the poor.
3. I can't decide whether I have to help her with the project.
4. Do you know when we should leave?
5. 도민준 was not sure whether he had to tell her the truth.

What is my mom doing right now? I wonder.---> I wonder what my mom is doing right now.
What does she want me to do? I guess
---> I guess what she wants me to do.

( when 은 부사절의 접속사로도 명사절의 접속사로도 쓸 수 있습니다. 명사절의 when은 미래 시제의 will / be going to 도 쓸 수 있습니다.)
Where should we go to find my mom? We have to find out.
---> We have to find out where we should go to find Jin's mom.
What do we need to have her back? Rabbi asked Jin.
---> Rabbi asked Jin what they needed to have her back. ( 주절의 시제와 종속절의 시제는 같아야합니다. )

Why does Jin look down? Yu asked Jason.

One day Jin was in the desert. It hasn't rained since last month. Everything was getting drier and drier. Jin's mom told her about a water plant in the desert. Jin asked what the name of the plant was. But her mom didn't know the name. "It has water in it." This was it. Now Jin was trying to find the plant for her friends and herself. It was when she heard a boy talk to her.
"Where is here? Where am I? I don't know where I am. Do you know where we are?"
the boy said. " I know where we are. We are in the desert. But I don't know who you are." Jin responded. The boy didn't look like the same as people around here. He was wearing a robe, and he had a short sword. He looked like someone special.
"I wonder if you are a kind of fox. Are you a fox?" the boy asked. "No, I am a koala.I don't know a fox." Jin answered. " Can you tell me where my fox is? Or, Can you tell me how I should find my fox. Oh Where should I go to find him?" the boy kept talking about a fox.
Not knowing anything about the fox, Jin felt sorry. Jin wanted to help the boy, so she started to ask about the fox. "If you want me to help you, tell me about your fox. Then we can go and find him." The boy looked at Jin and said, "My fox is a fox. He is tamed by me. He doesn't know when I come to see him. He didn't ask me where I came from. He never asked me what time I should come to play with him. I can't remember if I told him the time. Because I didn't know exactly when I could come back to Earth, I could not tell him anything. Poor him, he keeps waiting for me." As soon as the boy finished, Jin said. "I understand, but I don't know how I can find your fox among all other foxes. You should tell me about his face, color of fur or the shape of a tail. I need those facts to find him."
Suddenly here came a fox. Jin has never seen one, but he could see what it was. The animal was running toward the boy and it looked really happy. At the moment Jin wondered if the fox was smiling. It jumped to the boy. Both of them looked happy. Jin was pleased to see them happy as well. Jin wanted to know what made them so happy.
