허락 받고 추측할때 도와주는 친구 may
조동사 <3> May + R
1) 의미
- permission (허락) : 주로 의문문에 쓰이며 can 에 비해 좀 더 공적인 상황에서 허락을구할 때 may + R입니다.
친구에게 펜을 빌린다면 “Can I use your pen?"
우체국에서 빌리는 경우라면 “ May I use your pen?" 이 자연스럽습니다.
student : Mr.Smith, may I go to the restroom now? (선생님과 학생)
Mr.Smith : Yes, but please be quick.
Jiwon : Can I use your bathroom? (친구 사이)
Jaemin : Sure, go ahead.
* 영어에서 말하는 ‘공손함’ (politeness) 은 우리와 의미가 다소다릅니다. 우리는 나이나 지위가 기준이지만, 영어는 나와 얼마나 친밀한 지가 기준입니다. 특히 나이는 아주 차이가 많이 나는 경우가 아니라면 나보다 어려도 처음 본 상대에게는 공손한 표현을 사용하는 것이 좋습니다. 반대로 친구나 친척이라면 나이 차이가 좀 있어도 상당히 표현이 자유로운 편입니다.
** servant : My lord, may I leave now?
king: Yes, you may./ No you may not.
( Yes, you may. / No you may not. - 가능하지만 몹시 딱딱한 표현입니다. 왕과 하인 사이의 대화나 배경이 옛날인 경우에 간혹 쓰입니다. 보통 can을 씁니다.)
customer: May I have a booklet for the next season?
clerk: Yes, you can.
- possibility (가능성) : 반신반의 하는 경우. ‘R 일지도 모르겠다’.과거형 might 는, 시제 의미보다는 가능성이 더욱 희박한 경우에 주로 사용합니다.
You may be wrong. I may be right. (절반의 가능성, 50%)
Some people might have their clones. (좀 더 가능성이 희박한 추측, 30% 정도)
| <추측의 정도와 modal(조동사)>현재시제 (100%) : fact를 말 하는 것이므로 추측이 아닙니다.must R (90%) : 말하는 사람이 거의 분명하다고 확신하고 있습니다. 많은 경우 근거가있습니다. - He looks pale. He must be sick. (창백해 보이기 때문에 아프다고 확신) can R : 논리적으로 그렇게 되는 것이 맞는다고 생각하는 경우가 많습니다. - He went home at 4, and now it's 4:30, so he can be home. * may 도 비슷한 의미/ 경우 사용합니다. may R(50%) : 반반일 때 (R일지도 모르겠다) -I saw him at the hospital. He may be sick. (보호자일 수도 있고 방문객도 있고 다른 가능성도 여럿 있습니다.) might R(30%) : 잘 모르겠다는 느낌. ‘I'm not sure.’ 로 이 표현과 함께 쓰이는경우도 많습니다. - I'll arrive at the station at 5, and the ceremony will be at 5:30. It will take 40 minutes to get to the theater if traffic is OK, so I might be able to see the opening ceremony. But if traffic is bad I might miss it. I'm not sure. |

* may 가 be 와 함께 쓰이는 경우가 흔하다보니 'may be' 와‘maybe'를 혼동하는 경우가 있습니다. 뜻은 거의 같지만 may be 는 동사이고 maybe는 '아마도 , 어쩌면’ 이라는 부사로 전혀 다릅니다.
* 구조는 달라도 내용은 같기 때문에 maybe 로 쓴 문장을 may R 로 바꿔 쓸 수 있습니다.
Jin may be in Busan. = Maybe Jin is in Busan.
2) 형태
(긍정) may R
(부정) may not R
He may not be at home.
My aunt might not know about her surprise party. (아마도 알지 못했을 지도 모른다)
(의문) May 주어 R ... ?
May I come in? (허락의 경우) 추측일 때는 Can 주어 R ..?를 씁니다.
* May he be a police officer?(X) Can he be a police officer?
(과거) might R / might not R / Might 주어 R...? (쓰지 않음)
He might be a poet.
He might not be a poet.
Can he be a poet? (might 는 의문형을 거의 쓰지 않고 can 으로 )
(미래) may be going to R / may not be going to R / 의문형은 거의 쓰지 않는다.
Elizabeth may be going to be a Queen. 그녀가 여왕이 될지도 모르겠다.
Elizabeth may not be going to a Queen.
